Devanathan  Memorial Award

Dr. M. A. V. Devanathan, the doyen of physical chemistry in Sri Lanka is one of the greatest and internationally renowned chemist whose name is associated with the Triple Layer Theory in Electrochemistry which is called Devanathan’s Triple Layer theory.

This award is made annually to commemorate the commendable contributions and devoted services of Dr. Devanathan to the international community, the nation and the professional body of chemists in Sri Lanka.

The award is for an exceptional research contribution of an original nature in the field of Physical Chemistry and or related areas, such as Physical-Inorganic, Physical-Organic and Biophysical chemistry.

The award comprising of a Silver Medal will be presented at the Annual Sessions. The recipient of the award shall be invited to deliver the "Devanathan Memorial Award Lecture” at the Institute’s Annual Session.

Chandrasena Memorial Award

This award is made annually to commemorate Professor J. P. C. Chandrasena who was the first Sri Lankan to hold the Chair of Chemistry at the University of Ceylon. Prof Chandrasena excelled in the field of Organic Chemistry & Pharmacology.

The award is for an exceptional research contribution of an original nature in the field of Organic Chemistry and/or related areas such as Bio-chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Molecular Biology, Bioactivity studies etc.

The award comprising of a Silver Medal will be presented at the Annual Sessions. The recipient of the award shall be invited to deliver the “Chandrasena Memorial Award Lecture" at the Institute’s Annual Session.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARDS


1.
(a) Applications and nominations are invited on the prescribed form (Form C) for the above awards to reach the Hony. Secretary of the Institute of Chemistry on or before the 30th December of each year.

(b) Nominations of eligible candidates shall be entertained only from higher educational institutions, research institutions and members of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

(c) Applications will be entertained from any qualified Chemists.

(d) Applications and nominations will be entertained only on an individual basis. In the case of joint work, those involved in such work could apply on an individual basis, stating the degree of the individual's contribution.
   
2.
These awards are open to citizens of Sri Lanka engaged in the practice of the profession of chemical sciences and for work carried out principally in Sri Lanka.

In the case of Kandiah Memorial Awards the work presented for the award should have been carried out within five years of the closing date for applications and/or nominations for the award
   
3. Awards will, however, not be made if the work submitted is not of a suitable standard.

These awards will be presented at the Annual Session of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon. Work previously presented and recognized for any award shall not be taken into account again unless further development work has been done to a significant extent.
   
5.
The recipient of each award shall be invited to deliver the respective Award Lecture on the work submitted, at the Annual Session of the Institute.
   
6. The applications and nominations should be accompanied by the following:-

(i) Seven copies of a detailed Curriculum Vitae.
(ii) Seven copies of an outline (not exceeding 2000 words) describing the contribution.
(iii) Seven copies of all relevant material (publications and patents) in support of the Application.
(iv) A certificate from the Head of the Institution to certify that the work has been carried out by the applicant/nominee at that Institution
(v) A copy of a recent passport size photograph.
(vi) Seven copies of an abstract (not exceeding 500 words of the proposed award lecture, duly signed by the applicant or nominee). A copy of the abstract shall be made available to the referee(a).
   
7. The medium of communication shall be English.
   
8. The decision of the Council on all matters pertaining to the awards is final.
