Kandiah Memorial Awards

Awarded for the best research contribution in chemistry carried out by a postgraduate student registered at a Higher Educational Institute and for work carried out in Sri Lanka, with the exception of special analysis that cannot be done in the country. Those results must be less than 20% of findings. Sandwich programs carried out partially abroad do not qualify for the award.

These awards are made annually to commemorate Professor A Kandiah, the first President of the Chemical Society of Ceylon. Professor Kandiah served the University of Ceylon from 1933 to 1951. He was the Professor of Chemistry at the University of Ceylon until his death.

Each award will comprise of a Bronze Medal and a sum of Rs 5000/-.

The recipient of each award shall be invited to deliver "Kandiah Memorial Award "Lecture at the Annual Session.

Kandiah Award for Basic Chemistry

This award will be made annually for research predominately in basic Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic, Physical, and Analytical).

Kandiah Award for Applied Chemistry

This award will be made annually for research in chemistry related areas such as polymer, food, biochemistry, biotechnology etc. where interdisciplinary research involved and provided that chemistry has a central role and comprises at least 50% of the content.

Kandiah Memorial Graduateship Award

This will be awarded annually for the best piece of research in the chemical sciences carried out by a Graduate Chemist of the Institute Chemistry, Ceylon registered with a Higher Education Institute for a Post Graduate Degree either by course work or research and for the work carried out in Sri Lanka. This award is open only to Graduate Chemists of the College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon. (CRITERIA FOR THE AWARDS)

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARDS

Kandiah Memorial Awards

1.
(a) Applications and nominations are invited on the prescribed form (Form C) for the above awards to reach the Hony. Secretary of the Institute of Chemistry on or before the 30th December of each year.

(b) Nominations of eligible candidates shall be entertained only from higher educational institutions, research institutions and members of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

(c) Applications will be entertained from any qualified Chemists.

(d) Applications and nominations will be entertained only on an individual basis. In the case of joint work, those involved in such work could apply on an individual basis, stating the degree of the individual's contribution.
   
2.
These awards are open to citizens of Sri Lanka engaged in the practice of the profession of chemical sciences and for work carried out principally in Sri Lanka.

In the case of Kandiah Memorial Awards the work presented for the award should have been carried out within five years of the closing date for applications and/or nominations for the award
   
3. Awards will, however, not be made if the work submitted is not of a suitable standard.
   
4.
These awards will be presented at the Annual Session of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon. Work previously presented and recognized for any award shall not be taken into account again unless further development work has been done to a significant extent.
   
5.
The recipient of each award shall be invited to deliver the respective Award Lecture on the work submitted, at the Annual Session of the Institute.
   
6. The applications and nominations should be accompanied by the following:-

(i) Seven copies of a detailed Curriculum Vitae.
(ii) Seven copies of an outline (not exceeding 2000 words) describing the contribution.
(iii) Seven copies of all relevant material (publications and patents) in support of the Application.
(iv) A certificate from the Head of the Institution to certify that the work has been carried out by the applicant/nominee at that Institution
(v) A copy of a recent passport size photograph.
(vi) Seven copies of an abstract (not exceeding 500 words of the proposed award lecture, duly signed by the applicant or nominee). A copy of the abstract shall be made available to the referee(a).
   
7. The medium of communication shall be English.
   
8. The decision of the Council on all matters pertaining to the awards is final.


Professor M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry

This award is being made from the Professor M. U. S. Sultanbawa Felicitation fund, which was established on the occasion of his 75th Birthday to recognize the unique, distinguished and significant contribution made to the cause of Science, Chemistry, Education and Research in Sri Lanka by Vidya Jyothi Professor Mohamed Uvais Siddeek Sultanbawa.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD

1.
This award will be made annually for the Best Research paper presented at the International Conference.
   
2.
The award is open to citizens of Sri Lanka, who present research papers at the Annual Sessions, pertaining to work principally carried out and completed in Sri Lanka. Those who wish to be considered for this award should make a formal application on the prescribed form (Form D) to reach the Hony. Secretary, Institute of Chemistry, together with the other specified requirements and the abstract, on or before the date specified in the "Call for Abstract ".

If there are more than one author for the paper, the prescribed form should be submitted by an author who is a Corporate Member of the Institute.
   
3. After the applicants are informed about the acceptance of the paper, those who have applied for this award and whose papers have been accepted will be required to submit seven copies of the full text of the paper pertaining to the abstract in the form of a manuscript suitable for publication in "Chemistry in Sri Lanka" on or before 15th May, each year.

This manuscript will be made available to the Selection Committee. Failure to submit the full paper in the manner required will ipso facto result in disqualification  for consideration for the award.
   
4.
The selection committee will decide on the award, on the basis of the full paper submitted, presentation made at the Annual Session, and the discussion subsequent to the presentation.
   
5.
The formal presentation at the session can be made by any author who is a Corporate / Graduate member of the Institute. However, all the authors would be able to answer questions and discuss the paper subsequent to the formal presentation.
   
6. The award will however not be made, if all the papers submitted for consideration for the award are not of a suitable standard.
   
7.
The award (which will comprise of a certificate, Medal and a  sum of Rs. 10,000/=) will be presented at the subsequent Annual Session of the Institute. Where there are more than one author for a paper, the award will be made jointly, but presented to the Institute Corporate Member who submits the prescribed form.
   
8.
Work previously presented and recognized for any award in Sri Lanka or abroad shall not be eligible for consideration of this award.
   
9. The medium of communication shall be English.
   
10. The decision of the Council on all matters pertaining to the award is final.
